A Sneak Peak at Fall Trends

June 24th, 2008

In keeping with our “be prepared” theme, let’s take a sneak peek at trends to come in the near future. After all, the drawings on the designer’s desk today will be the styles of tomorrow.

The fall season begins September 21st (not far away) and whatever styles dominate, there’s one thing you can always count on: the staple fall colors. You know what they are. The tried and true burnt sienna, scarlet, deep (not bright) yellows and oranges. Whip out the color wheel and you’ll find complimentary colors in the violet and green/olive ranges.

Citing fall colors may work for high couture you say, but what about jewelry? Well, if you think about it, jewelry has to match or compliment whatever’s being worn. So if you know the most popular colors of any season, you can plan accordingly and order jewelry that matches. Brilliantly simple!

What would we recommend for fall? Anything that goes with those deep and brooding autumn colors. Possible candidates include a wide range of semi-precious stones, including jasper, jade, amber, malachite, sugilite and more.

And of course, silver jewelry itself is a perennial favorite. It goes with any season and practically any outfit.

Remember, it’s never too soon to prepare for the most lucrative time of year!

Silver Care 101

June 24th, 2008

When silver comes into continued contact with oxygen in air, it will tarnish. Tarnish also occurs when silver comes into contact with sulfur as well as certain acids.

That’s why it’s good to surface jewelry with a fine coat of the element rhodium. Contrary to popular belief, rhodium isn’t a cheap metal but is in fact the most expensive precious metal of all, outstripping gold, palladium and platinum in expense.

Known as rhodium flashing in the industry, this process protects the silver from coming into contact with oxygen, sulfur and harmful acids. Rhodium doesn’t oxidize and is very resistant to dissolving in acids, which makes it the best substance to protect silver jewelry.

To keep your silver tarnish-free, periodically clean your silver in a mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water. Make sure to thoroughly dry your silver jewelry before storing it in a dry container.

If your jewelry combines silver and leather, store in a cool, dry place away from heat, preferably in an open container that allows it to “breathe.”

To remove tarnish (oxidation) from silver, use a commercial silver dip liquid, polish paste or a polish cloth, available in jewelry supply or hardware stores.

Be careful not to expose gemstones to the cleaner or they may be harmed. Please read the cleaning product’s instructions before use. Thoroughly rinse jewelry after cleaning, and dry with a soft cloth until it’s completely dry.

Employing the above steps will keep your silver jewelry gleaming and shiny for decades to come.

Outa Sight Marcasite!

May 1st, 2007

Trend Alert! You heard it here first folks! Marcasite has been around for a while (at least since the Seventies… far out!), but it seems to be making a timely comeback.

If you don’t know what Marcasite is, it’s a natural mineral used in jewelry, which is cut and shaped very much like diamonds. It doesn’t attempt to look exactly like diamonds and can’t be mistaken for diamonds (as in cubic zirconia) but it does create an eye-catching sparkle and intriguing look.

What’s in vogue now, as far as silver and marcasite are concerned, is “the vintage” look. Turn of the century to the early 30’s inspired designs mixed with 21st century freshness. It’s a fun and nostalgic blend. Look for it on all fashion divas everywhere!

Amethyst: Pure Seduction

April 27th, 2007

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz often used in jewelry or as an ornament.

In the days of old, this unique gemstone was said to protect from many evils, one of them being seduction! So if you’re wondering why you’re not getting any “love” per se, you may want to dispose of your amethyst. Personally, I think it has the opposite effect. The rich violet is quite enticing (or so men tell me… I know, modesty). But there’s more.

The name derives from the Greek a (”not”) and methuskein (”to intoxicate”). Yes, the ancient Greeks and Romans believed amethyst would protect them from getting too “trashed.” They even got busy crafting cups and goblets out of amethyst so they wouldn’t get drunk – the irony being they thought it would allow them to drink more! Thus the saying, “work hard, orgy even harder.”

Then there was Moses. He described the gemstone as a symbol of the Spirit of God while the Russian Empress Catherine the Great commanded miners by the thousand into the Ural Mountains in search of it.

In my humble opinion, Amethyst goes great with gold, but looks even better with silver (maybe I’m biased). But however and wherever you wear it, just make sure it doesn’t interfere with all the seduction bound your way!
